Luxembourg skier of Austrian origin. It is the best skier active nowadays and even of all time, his record surpasses the historical Thoeni, Stenmark and Zurbriggen. Rejected by the Austrian Federation, it competes for Luxembourg and is the skier who several times has won the Alpine World Cup, with five won titles in 1985, 1986, 1989, 1991 and 1993, which would probably be over without an injury that, in 1989, was about to make him retire. Girardelli, however, continued with their domain without further change that happen to dominate the technical disciplines (slalom and giant) to overcome in speed (downhill and supergiant). He has added 45 victories in World Cup events, and in the season 1988-1989, became the only skier to achieve victories in the four qualifying specialties. Of the combined (downhill and slalom) world champion in 1987, 1989 and 1996 and slalom in 1991, adds further four silver medals and three bronze in various specialties in the World Championships. His record is only inferior in Olympics because the Austrian Federation prevented their participation in Sarajevo 1984, Calgary 1986, did diminished by injuries. In Albertville 1992, won silver in the giant and supergiant slalom.
