Biography of Fray Pedro de Alcántara (1499-1562)

Religious mystical trend writer born at Alcántara (Cáceres) and died in Arenas de San Pedro (Ávila). After studying at Salamanca, was ordered Franciscan priest in 1524. He/She founded the reformed Franciscan monastery of El Pedroso. His most important work is the treatise of prayer and meditation (1560), based on the book of the same title of Fray Luis de Granada. The personal influence which exerted on Santa Teresa de Jesús, with whom he/she had abundant epistolary relationship was great. In 1622 he/she was beatified by Gregorio XV and canonized by Clement IX in 1669.
