Spanish painter, born in Ferrol (La Coruña) in 1875 and died in Madrid in 1960. Galician noble lineage, his father, marino's profession, died as Fernando a child. The family moved to Toledo, and was in this city where José Gutiérrez acquired vocation beside the Professor of drawing and the landscape painter José Vera. In 1893 began his university studies in Madrid and there he/she met the painter Manuel Domínguez, who definitely oriented him towards painting. After his apprenticeship in the workshop of Manuel Domínguez, in 1899 he/she won a Board of the school of San Fernando for the Academy of fine arts in Rome, with its picture anarchist sentenced to death, from the Italian city morning traveled to Paris, the Netherlands and Belgium. This trip allowed him to meet the French Impressionists and Dutch, and Flemish painting that had a great influence on his work.
In 1905 he/she returned to Galicia, where was seduced by the simple atmosphere of the village life and prepared his series of Galician subjects. This stage includes pictures such as: the Reaper, leaving mass at the pazo of Mende and in Bergantinos.en 1908 wedding food settled in Santiago of Chile, whose school of fine arts was director until his return to Spain in 1915. In our country developed an important artistic and administrative career that made him one of the most important and influential figures of the artistic medium 'official'. Thus, not only the painter in the Court of Alfonso XII can be considered, but it became head of the Prado Museum between 1922 and 1931, 1939 and 1960, and the Academy of fine arts of San Fernando from 1953.Es an artist that thematically and stylistically blends with painters such as Rosales, Pradilla and Muñoz Degrain, and that through the use of pure and bright colors and a peasant or folk theme pursues an exaltation of the Spanish intrastory. In its catalogue abound the portraits of personalities of the political and economic life of the country. In 1922, when he/she was appointed director of the Museo del Prado, his artistic evolution opened a new stage characterized by portraits with Velasquez landscapes, as in that of Alfonso XIII and the Duchess of Santoña. Some mythological, as Leda or satyr and nymph pictures, also belong to this time.
With the fall of the monarchy, he/she settled in England and did not return to Spain until after the Civil War. Spanish painting exhibitions in Geneva and Buenos Aires increased his painting traditional character, as the portrait of the Duchess of Alba and the Duke of Hijar.en show the last twelve years of his life, he/she produced works of broad Bill such as: Ceres, San Agustín, San Vicente Ferrer or misfortune.
