Spanish painter born in the city of Tunisia in 1864 and died in Buenos Aires in 1927. He/She was brother of the painters César, Dolores and Helena Álvarez Dumont.
He began his art studies at the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid. In 1882 he/she obtained first place in the oppositions convened by the Academy of history of Rome, where he/she moved seven years later as a pensioner. In the meantime, is unveiled in the painting circles of the country celebrating individual and collective exhibitions in which he/she demonstrated his mastery in the use of color. He/She also attended competitions and artistic competitions such as Nacional de Bellas Artes in the years 1884, 1887, 1890 and 1892. In 1889 he/she came to Rome, the city where he/she lived for several years. In the Italian capital he/she expanded his technique and pictorial knowledge attending the evening classes of the prestigious Chigi Academy and the international circle of fine arts; result of this are his works the death of Adonis, copy of a Pompeian painting, and the death of Churruca at Trafalgar, which was awarded honorable mention in the year 1893.
Like his brother César, Eugenio Álvarez Dumont specialized in military historical themes, specifically in scenes from the war of independence, who always treated with a clear patriotic spirit, as they show their pictures Malasaña and his daughter beat against the French (who presented the exhibition of fine arts), guerrillas against the invader, the 3 of may of 1808War to the intruder, value and glory, El teniente Ruiz, the drum of the Bruch, Honor the dead, etc. However, his best canvas probably save the corpse!, where you can see perfectly the great talent that Eugenio Álvarez had to describe with pinpoint accuracy across a complex situation loaded with drama in a simple canvas with small dimensions.
In 1898 he/she accompanied his brother on a long journey through several countries in North Africa, during which was literally soaked luminosity of the region and Eastern environments, as you can see in his work a street in Pompeii and the House of Meleager. He/She furthered her studies in Paris, and on his return to Spain ended up settling in Madrid, where taught in the school of Arts and industries. As a painter and Decorator, he/she carried out various works in private mansions of Madrid and Buenos Aires, where it lived until his death, at the same time carried out a number of drawings for books. In the latter period of his artistic life he/she practiced more often landscape, portrait and pictures traditionalists, like the buenaventura, a cheerful tale, bullfight in La Mancha, Embroiderers of chasubles and gathering in the courtyard.
