Biography of Diogo Pinto de Freitas do Amaral (1941-VVVV)

Professor and Portuguese politician born in Póvoa de Varzim (Porto district) on July 27, 1941. He/She graduated in law at the University of Lisbon (1963), ending the following year complementary course of legal sciences. During the race he/she had been President of the Association of students of law from 1961 to 1962. After graduating in 1964, he/she became Assistant Professor in the same Faculty of law, doctoral student in 1967. The following year he/she held the Chair of administrative law professor Marcelo Caetano vacated to occupy the headquarters of the Government instead of Antonio de Oliveira Salazar. In the following years he/she had the post of Procurator of the corporate camera and took part in the direction of the Portuguese Institute of Administrative Sciences.

After the Carnation Revolution he/she was a member of the Council of State (1974-1975). By this time, on July 19, 1974, created together with Adelino Amaro da Costa a party called democratic Social Center (CDS), who presided over until the end of December 1982. He/She held several public positions: Member, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs (1980, in the Cabinet of Francisco Sá Carneiro, of the Social Democratic Party, PSD, but both forming part of the Coalition Democratic Alliance), interim Prime Minister (1980-1981) and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister national defence (1981-1983, during the Government of Francisco Pinto Balsemão, of the PSD). Also, between 1981 and 1983, was President of the European Union of Christian democracy (EUCD). This simultanesus everything from 1977 with classes at the Portuguese Catholic University. Candidate for the Presidency of the Republic was submitted in 1986, but was defeated by Mario Soares, of the Socialist Party (PS). From 1992 to 1993 was again Deputy, and between 1995 and 1996, the President of the General Assembly of the United Nations.

Married, with four children, lives in Chascáis (district of Lisbon).
