Biography of Rodrigo Arenas Betancourt (1919-1995)

Sculptor and Colombian writer, born on October 23, 1919 in Fredonia (Antioquia), and died in the city of Medellin on May 12, 1995. He studied at various national and international academies, which include the Institute of fine arts of Medellin, the school of fine arts of the National University of Santa Fe de Bogota, the Academy of San Carlos and the free association of art La Esmeralda (Mexico). He travelled throughout the American continent and also for Europe, where he made various trades such as farmer, postman, Carver of Christs, sculptor and painter of pictures, Assistant, and sculptors, scenography Assistant worker, teacher, photographer and writer, among others.

He held various positions at home and abroad, which include artistic Adviser of the University of Antioquia, Minister Counselor of the Embassy of Colombia to the Government of Italy, founder and Professor of the school of crafts Citadel of Mexico. In 1972 he won the national prize of plastic arts of Colombia, by renowned for his monumentalist Colcultura.Es, where expressed his desire to highlight the heroic events of the Colombian people and characters that have shaped the culture of its country to. He managed various artistic techniques as drawing, watercolor, portrait and self-portrait, participating with them in various solo and group exhibitions in Spain, France, United States, Mexico, Colombia and other countries.His sculptural works include: wound Macaw (1959, located in Cuernavaca, Mexico), the monumental heads of the heroes of the Mexican Revolution: Moreno, Hidalgo, Juarez and Zapata (1959, located in different places of the city), Christ Prometheus (1965-1968, at the University of Antioquia), monument to the Lancers (1968-1971, commemorating the battle of Vargas swamp and localized in Paipa)(, Boyac√°) and Las Bananeras (1974-1978-as tribute reminder to the massacre of 1928 in Santa Marta-, located in Cienaga, Magdalena).
