Biography of Willem Bilderdijk (1756-1831)

Poet and Dutch patriot who was born in Amsterdam and died in Haarlem. Supporter of the Orange, went into exile when the French invaded the Netherlands in 1795. Anchored in the past, wrote a history of the country, very pessimistic before the new democratic tendencies. He/She was nostalgic of aristocratic ideals and religious values. Wrote the poem epico-biblico the end of the first world, 1820 and the destruction of the first world, considered his masterpiece epic poem. Other notable compositions are: the freedom of the Netherlands, poem; Poems of Ossian; Warriors songs; tragedies.
