Biography of Guillermo Enrique Billinghurst (1851-1915)

Peruvian politician. He/She participated in the expedition of the "Talisman" during the war between Chile and Peru. He/She was Deputy and Senator. His supporters prevented the holding of the elections of 1912 in Lima and other cities. They coerced the members so they will void the minutes which proclaimed winner to the civil law Antero Aspillaga and chose Billinghurst. He/She sought the support of the people with social measures. However, these measures caused the enmity with the army, and in February 1914, he/she was overthrown by Colonel Oscar R. Benavides, having to go into exile.
