Biography of Carlos Castillo Armas (1914-1957)

Military and Guatemalan politician. He/She was director of the Military Academy and exiled himself to assume the President Jacobo Arbenz Guzmán in 1951. He/She took refuge in Honduras and there took place the CIA plan to overthrow Arbenz. In 1954 his troops, with air support from the United States, overthrew Arbenz, and this had to resign. Castillo took the Chair and made to approve a new Constitution, abolished the laws of agrarian reform, in addition to returning to the United Fruit Co. the expropriated lands, he/she interrupted the program in favour of the Indians and dissolved Congress. He/She was murdered at the Presidential Palace by a soldier of his guard.
