Biography of Cimón (¿-449 a. C.)

Athenian general, son of MILTIADES and a Thracian Princess. He settled in Athens, where he married a Princess of the family of the Alcmaeonidae. He was elected in the 479 strategist of the Confederacy of Delos. He expelled from Byzantium Pausanias and came upon the coasts of Thrace. He powerfully collaborated in the formation of the Athenian Empire in the period that followed the wars between Greeks and Persians. His conservative and friendly policy toward the Spartans put him in opposition to the great Pericles.
