Biography of Alejandro Ferrant y Fischermans (1843-1917)

Spanish painter; He/She was born in Madrid on September 9, 1843 and died in the same city on January 20, 1917. He/She was nephew of the painter Luis Ferrant Llausás, with which he/she took his first steps in painting. Subsequently, he/she studied at the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. During his tenure at the Center, received awards in different subjects, which proves its great powers. It is the case of the drawing of the Natural, old drawing, clothing, color and composition. He/She highlighted as a draftsman and, likewise, by his mastery of oil and watercolor techniques.

His painting evolved from academicism drinking the teachings of his uncle and, subsequently, their stay in Rome, up to Impressionism paintings such as La Familia in the garden, now in a private collection. It highlighted as author of historical painting, although from the beginning it was an excellent portraitist (thus proves it the third medal in the national exposition of 1864 with a portrait of his uncle and teacher). However, the original and most advanced of his painting is in its landscapes, sketches and notes, painted without pretensions, for their family circle, and today scattered collections and museums.

Before this Medal, he/she had already obtained the first prize in a competition in Cadiz with the theme the fall of Murillo in Cadiz Capuchin. Also in Cadiz, and in 1866, will get another (this second class) in the exhibition by San José with the Christ child.

His stage as a pensioner in Rome, started in 1874, dates his first great historical painting: San Sebastián in the Cloaca Maxima, painting which, after presented with great success at the exhibition of the Academy of Rome in 1877, won first medal at the exhibition of 1878. the same stage is the disputation of the sacrament, half painted with Pradilla.

Most advanced in the treatment of the drawing is the parade of the French troops in front of the Spanish Pavilion at the Palacio of Trocadero (1879), sent from Rome.

Upon his return, in 1880, joined the Royal Academy of fine arts of San Fernando and, two years later, returns to obtain first medal at the national exhibition, this time by the cardinal Cisneros visiting the works of the hospital de Tavera, matter which shows itself only the exhaustion which was falling the historical painting at the end of the century. He/She taught at the Central School of Arts and crafts and term in 1903, he/she was appointed director of the Museum of modern art. He/She was decorated with the Grand Cross of Isabel the Catholic (1889) and the academic palms of France (1905). He/She collaborated in the work of decoration, such as the Church of San Francisco el Grande (within whose set that highlights his work as one of the best, despite the haste with which he/she was forced to work, in addition to being the reason that be granted the aforementioned cross of Isabel the Catholic), as in the Palace of the Infanta Isabel or the Ministry of public instruction (allegory of the fine arts) in Madridthe Diputación Provincial de Pamplona, the Palacio de Justice of Barcelona or the Casino de Zaragoza among others.

The picture that best shows the evolution of Ferrant is the last communion of San Fernando, painting of large dimensions which today is kept in the Palacio of the Senate and that was ordered by the infante don Sebastián, protector of the painter, in 1867. More than seven years Ferrant took to not conclude the picture and, moreover, interrupt it with the death of the infante in 1875. Only in 1914, when it commissioned its completion by the Senate, which paid the 40 painter. 000 pesetas by it.
