Biography of Henry Jaynes Fonda (1905-1982)

Henry Fonda.

American actor of theatre and cinema, born in Grand Island (Nebraska), on May 16, 1905, and died in Los Angeles (California), on August 12, 1982. His real name was Henry Jaynes Fonda.

His father ran a printing press. Henry began studies in journalism at the University of Minnesota. Two years of entering the University, had to leave his activity as a student, because the economic situation of the family were not allowed to continue studying. Parents of Marlon Brando facilitated you entry into the community theater in Omaha, where he/she spent three years as an apprentice and became trapped by a world and a profession that is revealed to you as fascinating, and that encouraged him to participate in films and writing sketches that he/she himself played. He/She later worked with the company University Players, where coincides with Joshua Logan, James Stewart and Margaret Sullivan, who will become his first wife. He/She was also interested for some time in the scenery. In the mid-1930s, he/she made her debut on Broadway as first actor, and in the middle of that same decade begins his film career.

He signed a contract with Walter Wanger to interpret cinema. His first performance was in contrast (1935), the adaptation of a theatrical play performed by himself and directed by Victor Fleming. Fonda never forgot the recommendations he/she did about the different ways of interpreting in film and theater.

He chose by le general her roles carefully, and even had performances that director Henry Hathawayrefused to do, as it was the case of the revenge of Frank James (1940), Fritz Lang, film that only agreed to act on it after his friend, recommend that.

Throughout the 1930s he/she acted in many films of very different argument: action, romantic comedies, but also stories socially committed. He/She had a special ability to anonymity carrying papers, a sort of overcome shyness, which were very pleased to the public. At the same time, he/she was able to infuse a spontaneous natural situations that another actor would have seemed ridiculous. This period should be noted his work in only live once (1937), also with Fritz Lang. Despite his work with German director, he/she was not happy with it, as he/she described it as a director of puppet.

Most personal development acquired it from the hand of John Ford, who even while many considered him a director of epic themes, was someone very close to everyday life, even to neorealism. He/She did not like their actors to sobreactuasen, and that spirit very well matched the form of Fonda. Example of this are the young Lincoln (1939) and, especially, the grapes of wrath (1940), a production that had more narrative conceptions of the Europeans to which they have become famous in cinema to Americans.

Henry Fonda was hired by the Fox, and the relationship with the great producer was not how happy he/she would have been able to wish. Except for incident at Ox-Bow (1943), William A. Wellman, a western out of the ordinary, Fonda declared, hate all these years films. When the United States went to war against Germany, Zanuck was able to delay the incorporation of the actor to the Navy, in order to rodase the immortal Sergeant (1943), John M. Sthal.

He participated in the Pacific war, where he/she attained the grade of Lieutenant, medals and citations for his personal courage. End of the war, he/she returned to work for Fox, of the hand back of Ford, in passion of the strong (1946), a film about the argument of the duel occurred at the O.K. Corral, but with the prospect of an everyday fact, that other titles on the subject have shunned.

Henry Fonda was always an actor who assumed roles of 'good'. Once changed, the pleasure of offering other types of psychologists, but that was rather at the end of his career. However, in 1948 did a paper that presented a different perspective, where usual its thinness and containment have, with great sensitivity, a harder, more unfriendly psychology. It was when he/she made Lieutenant Colonel in Fort Apache, again with his admired John Ford. It was a military reglamentista, clean and elegant, when co-workers are dirty and are a little vulgar and, although at the time you know behave as required a professional army, Fonda was not this time exemplary and practical man who grew accustomed to styling in his career, with all the exceptions that suits take into account.

From this last film he/she left cinema for a while, because he/she felt the need to return to the theatre. Thus it remained until 1955. Despite having done much film, only feel partially satisfied in their work. During those years, he/she played his famous role as "Mister Roberts", which some time later, when it was thought in its film adaptation, earned him a serious confrontation with John Ford, which, at the end, the film is not shot. The reason for this confrontation arose because for paper protagonist thought was Marlon Brando, that the script was too comic for Fonda.

Although he/she never sought publicity, Fonda was always subject to the attention of the public, especially by its sound marriage failures and hard relationships with his sons Peter and Jane. Man calm, quiet and sometimes even unfairly pursued (case of his character in guilty false, film shot in 1957 by Alfred Hitchcock), outside of the screen was very different. His character was very strong and, occasionally, until violent.

In 1957 it reached one of the highlights of his career, when he/she appeared in twelve angry men, with a very good direction of Sydney Lumet. He/She was the only member of a jury that was opposed to the conviction of a defendant, whose statement seemed very clear, but that could convince otherwise other members. To do this film, he/she had to create his own production company, which allowed him to choose the actors and rehearse as if it were a play.

The arrival of the 1960s will mark the beginning of its decline, although it still rolls some important works, which helped him to continue at the forefront; It is gradually becoming an actor more prompting nostalgia than to count on him to the cinema of the time. Among his best performances in these years are the storm over Washintagon (1962) politician and first victory (1965), both by Otto Preminger.

At the end of the 1960s moved to Europe, although the only role that is worth noting is the of until it was your time (1968), Sergio Leone, its almost unique intervention as evil in a representative of the spaghetti-western European film. In 1970, at the hands of the elegant, Joseph l. Mankiewicz, wheel a western irregular and twilight, the day of cheaters, which contains very valuable partial successes, including his interpretation of a warden of the prison, which counts among its prisoners to Kirk Douglas (also his son Michael, worked then little-known). A hard and rough, topic that was covered in comedy, with a special sense of humor. Or the "bad" were so bad, even the "good guys" as good. Fonda, rather than a veteran, was already a tight interpretation of an ambiguous alcaide: good person and cynical at the same time. It was one of his last prominent works.

I would still do some more films, but their presence was no longer what it had meant years earlier. In 1981 it makes virtually his last appearance in the film in the pond gold, of Mark Rydell, a good interpretation, accompanied by a splendid Katharine Hepburn, of an old man almost decrepit and scared to see how life is blurring. Got the Oscar, but even recognizing their worth, it was rather the award a man is dying and that the film wanted to repay its debts.

In 1982 died in Los Angeles, an actor, father and grandfather of actors, with a long history and proven talent. Defined himself as follows: "I was not sure have a goal as an actor, except the be good and convincing." All that can make an actor with a role is to interpret it the best thing can, try to think about it as much as possible and suggest to the viewer the greatest number of things."

Henry Fonda belonged to a generation of actors who already ceased to exist. He/She communicated with an almost innately viewers. It was instinctive and cult. Attractive more than handsome, had clear eyes which cause admiration and had a great capacity for expression. He/She was an inveterate womanizer and, although his life was somewhat eventful, never lost papers and his composure at any time. He/She surrendered to his profession above all things, and was those who knew to accept over the years, adapting its interpretations to the age which had, unless this would cause him difficulty. It was profoundly realistic in terms of the way of approaching what the world of the cinema and the theatre meant for an actor. I will never leave flatter and manipulate, being true to itself in the good and the bad.
