Biography of Rutger Hauer (1944-VVVV)

Film actor Dutch, born January 23, 1944 in Breukelen.

The artistic origins of Rutger Hauer lie in the world of street theatre, which was dedicated in his youth. He combined his work as a Thespian with other occupations, as handling the backdrops and the remaining stage tooling in a theater of Basel, or exercise of tour guide in the Alps and promote one of his passions: mountaineering. But his physical strength and good interpretative skills did not pass unnoticed to a young and impetuous compatriot of Hauer, director Paul Verhoeven, with whom he began a long friendship that resulted in several of the great successes of the Dutch cinema of the seventies: Turkish delight (1972), Keetje Tipel (1974), Eric, official of the Queen (1977) and live at the top (1979)all them directed by Verhoeven.

The international impact of these films was swift and the unmistakable face of Hauer was soon known to European viewers. After rolling in the old continent titles such as mysteries (1978), Paul Lussanet, British filmmaker Ridley Scott discovered in him an excellent interpreter for one of the Androids of the futuristic tragedy Blade Runner (1982). Hauer wandered through this world sick of the future as if it were a mythical hero, sentenced to annihilation, able to redeem their crimes with almost poetic aspirations. In many cases, his magnetic presence comes to overshadow the true protagonist of the film, Harrison Ford. This role in the film of Scott was his passport to North American film, although this did not stop him returning to Europe to shoot in Spain the Lords of steel (1984), on the orders of Paul Verhoeven again, but was immediately claimed by Hollywood for filming a medieval romance, Lady Hawk (1985), Richard Donner, and the vicissitudes of a very particular psychopath on road to hell (1986), Robert Harmon.

When their future seemed unbeatable, his friend Verhoeven offered him the role protagonist of Robocop (1987), the actor rejected pore thinking that deserved to play characters of greater intensity and, of course, without a suit of armor that cover his face. Unfortunately, his decision was a terrible mistake. RoboCop was a box-office success and Hauer career was stagnant. Since then, the actor had limited to certain European productions and films Hollywood's modest aspirations, as Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992), of Frank Kazui. Despite their repeated attempts, Rutger Hauer has failed to regain the success that lived in the mid-1980s.
