High priest of the Jews, born around the year 1257 and died in the 1159 before J. C. descendant of Itomar, second son of Aaron, and happened to Samson in the dignity of supreme judge. Had two sons, Hophni and Phineas, who also wielded the dignity of priests; but they kept the meat to the sacrifices and slept with women who were going to watch at the door of the Tabernacle. Heli rebuked them, but all too gently. The Lord by the mouth of Samuel, announced his punishment, and indeed, when the Philistines attacked the Israelites, they were these losers; they were dead in the thirty thousand field, including the two sons of Heli, and the Holy Ark fell into enemy hands; Knowing these misfortunes Heli, dropped from his seat and a coup occurred in the head, he died.
