Biography of Pablo Iglesias Posse (1850-1925)

Pablo Iglesias.

Spanish politician. Founder and President of the workman Spanish Socialist Party (PSOE) and of the General Union of workers (UGT). Born in El Ferrol (La Coruña) on October 18, 1850. His father at an early age, travels, along with his family to Madrid to seek the protection of his maternal uncle. The death of his relative forces to his mother, Doña Juana Posse, to send his two sons to a hospice, where Pablo will learn the craft of typographer. Begins its intense political activity at the age of twenty and a social environment of great permissiveness which, after the victory of La Gloriosa (1868), lavished on the entire country. From the beginning, its activity is linked to the proletarian movements. It joins the Association International de labour (AIT), founded in Madrid in January, 1869, and was elected secretario-corresponsal of the Association in the region of the North. Raised the ideological split between Marxists and bakunistas, at the International Congress of the Hague, held in September 1872. Paul stays true to the line advocated by Marx. The following year, he/she joined the Association General of the art of printing, which becomes President. His innate talent and his office take him to write in the daily newspapers of its time. Write in the weeklies workers solidarity and emancipation, until 1882, year in which are closed. In 1886 he/she founded the Socialist, official newspaper of the Socialist Worker party Spanish, which is named director. Subsequently, he/she collaborated in various publications, such as the Popular illustration (1897), the modern Spain (1898), new age (1901), magazine Socialist (1903), etc. On May 2, 1879, along with other colleagues, members internationalist Marxist line, cover, in a tavern of Tetuán Street, in Madrid, the Socialist Labor Spanish party.

Their goals were very clear from the beginning, I wanted to build a party strongly cohesive internally, and that honesty and morality were undisputed. The growth of the party was very slow, to the Foundation, in 1888, of the General Workers Union (UGT), involving a strengthening of the movement. In spite of this, he/she did not abandon the Presidency of the two Socialist groups until his death in Madrid on December 9, 1925. With his death the Spanish Socialist movement is without historical leader, and loses its internal cohesion, motivated by the serious problems crawling from the strike of 1917, and encreased by the controversial debate on income at the third international.
