Biography of Paul K. Lerpae (1900-1989)

Technical special effects us, born on April 7, 1900, and died on October 5, 1989. Despite being one of the most qualified specialists in their field of work, his name was relegated to a second discrete flat by the fact of having worked alongside one of the most important truquistas in the history of the cinema, Gordon Jennings, under whose orders intervened in several films of the director Cecil B. Mille (1881-1959), as Samson and Delilah (1949) and the inconquistables (1947). Thanks to the work carried out in the latter movie was awarded Lerpae with a Hollywood Oscar to the best special effects (1947).

Another of his most celebrated works by the public and critics was which was created, also under the supervision of Gordon Jennings, in the filming of the war of the worlds (1953), Byron Haski, where he was able to simulate, using highly innovative in its time, a terrible invasion of Earth by alien spacecraft. The spectacular attack of these flying saucers, as well as their powerful destructive power was designed by Lerpae; but their effectiveness would have been embodied in the film had not been by the brilliant work of two collaborators his, Chet Pate and Albert Nozaki, responsible for the design and construction of models of ships.

The spectacular nature of the work done by Lerpae and colleagues encouraged Byron Haski to undertake the filming of another famous sci-fi movie, the conquest of space (1955), whose producer, George Pal, commissioned again to Paul K. Lerpae and his team of collaborators the simulation of these aerial and Galactic effects that seemed to have been specialized since they triumphed, in 1936, with star hunters.

Little by little, new generations of technicians and engineers that were incorporated in the Hollywood industry were painting itself dreary development Lerpae and co-workers. But the old master, far from abandoning, recycled their knowledge and put all his art to the service of comedy, where he tricks less spectacular than those of his previous works "space", but just as effective and, no doubt, much more endearing. Thus, it powerfully caught the attention of the more benevolent public with fun transformations of Jerry Lewis (1926)-in the Nutty Professor - directed by the aforementioned actor; and it put a flourish to his long career with a few simple but unforgettable effects which asked Gene Saks to the odd couple (1968).
