Biography of Alejandro Lerroux García (1864-1949)

Spanish politician born in Córdoba in 1864 and died in Madrid in 1949. Difficult and adventurous youth, he/she became known as a journalist in the newspaper El País, newspaper Republican trend that ended up directing. Later, the intransigent and progress the Radical founded the Rotary. In his articles and campaigns, almost all them noisy and that very often they ended in duels or physical confrontations, it was where it was forged his demagogic style, which not is recató to use more verbal violence against his enemies. These media campaigns resulted penalties and imprisonments in the years 1898 and 1899. Thanks to the campaign against the process of Montjuich got a great notoriety among the Catalan workers. In Barcelona, he/she made a series of campaigns with a clamorous and high-sounding demagoguery, using the revolutionary and anti-clerical topics of the time and getting attract the working-class masses. It was as well as in 1901, he/she obtained his first seat and the nickname by which would be already known: the side of Emperor. Next to the great politician Salmeron, he/she founded the Union Republican party, which enabled him to successive elections of 1903 and 1905 he/she bade elected Deputy for Barcelona. In the year 1906 Solidaritat Catalá party was formed by what Lerroux declared opponent of the movement, which had a clear nationalist tendency. Lerroux was badly defeated in the elections of the year 1907. In that same year he/she founded his own party, the Radical Republican, but it had to go into exile to Argentina to be condemned by the audience of Barcelona following a grueling article he/she had written. In 1909 he/she returned to Spain, but the events of the tragic week of Barcelona caught him in the Canary Islands, where lost no opportunity of further fuelling the rarefied political climate in the country. He/She moved to England, where he/she returned in 1910. That same year it was again elected Deputy for Barcelona thanks to a coalition of republicana-socialista Court. But the following year he/she was attacked by his political allies, accused of being in collusion with the multiple administrative abuses of City Hall. Since then, its political postulates were drifting towards positions centrist and conservative, so it lost all support of the working classes. At that time, Lerroux devoted himself to practice a politics of conspiracies anti-royalist.

With the advent of the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera (1923-1930), Lerroux was away from political activity as a result of a series of electoral defeats. In the year 1929 departed from Lerroux some of their most valuable allies, led by Marcelino Domingo, to form the Radical Socialist Party. Due to its Republican past, to the fall of the dictatorship, he/she was called to be part of the Pact of San Sebastián, whereby it established the second Spanish Republic. Lerroux got the first cabinet formed in the direction of the ministries of State. That date was opened a new political era of Lerroux, marked by a more moderate and realistic tone but clearly drifting towards more conservative positions. With the disaster of the left in the 1933 elections, Lerroux became a key figure. Between 1933 and 1935 he/she came to preside over six different Governments, counting with the support of the CEDA (Spanish Confederation of autonomous rights), and especially of its charismatic leader Gil Robles, with whom he/she formed Government in 1934. The decomposition of the right was evident during the year 1935. That same year broke the scandal, by estraperlo, involving leading members of the Government. Lerroux was forced to resign. In the 1936 elections, Lerroux and his party were swept since they did not get any Deputy. This meant the political demise of Lerroux. Exiled in Portugal very beginning of the war, he/she returned to Spain shortly before his death.

In addition to the large number of articles he/she wrote in newspapers of the time, he/she was also author of several books, among them in the service of the Republic, the little story, and his memoirs, published in 1962.
