Biography of José Baptista Pinheiro de Azevedo (1917-1983)

Military and Portuguese politician, born in 1917 and died in 1983, who was Prime Minister of the Republic between 1975 and 1976. During the Carnation Revolution, he was part of the Junta of national salvation, and he was appointed Chief of the General staff (1974). He was in charge of the interim cabinet for just one year, after which strengthened his position thanks to the support of the Socialist Party and the Social Democratic Party; He presented his candidacy for the Presidency in 1976, but did not get access to the office.
