Biography of Marceliano Santamaría Sedano (1866-1952)

Spanish painter; He was born in Burgos on June 18, 1866 and died in Madrid on October 12, 1952. He began his studies at the art school of his hometown, where he is pupil of Evaristo Barrio and Isidro Gil. Later, he travels to Madrid, where he joined in the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, while working in the workshop of Manuel Domínguez. After finishing his studies, is granted for the Academy of Rome. On his return, moved to Madrid, where he was Assistant Professor of the Instituto de San Isidro and, later, Professor of the school of Arts and crafts, which became director. In 1913, he was received into the Royal Academy of fine arts of San Fernando. Also it belonged, as, to the Academy of Havana. In 1925, he was appointed honorary citizen of his hometown. Other honours that were granted were the Grand Cross of Isabel the Catholic and the Gold Medal of the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid.

He noted as a painter of historical theme, so El Triunfo de la Santa Cruz at the battle of Navas de Tolosa, of genre scenes in which appears the social intention (such is the case of the price of a mother, whose long subtitle, following the style of the time, reads: A villager abandons his son to go to raise one outside and the villager)(, at the time of the separation, doubt if you will regret the contract) and portraits. However, highlighted especially as a landscaper in works such as picking flowers or by referring to the time.He participated in six national exposures, rather than it just won award in three of them: that of 1890 (medal third class by the Pontifical mass, today in the Palacio Real de Riofrio, Segovia), 1892 (Medal of the second class by the aforementioned triumph of the Holy Cross in the battle of the Navas de Tolosa) and 1895 (new Medal of the second class by A Epistle). Also obtained a medal at the 1889 Paris Universal, medal only at Universal in Chicago of 1893, third medal at the Paris Universal of 1899, diploma of honour at the 1894 Barcelona international gold medal at the Seville Iberoamericana de 1929.En 1968, sixteen years after his death, opened a museum consisting of eighty-seven paintings bequeathed by his nephew and heir in Burgos.
