Biography of Alberto Sordi (1920-2003)

Actor and Italian film director born on June 15, 1920 in Rome (Italy) and died in the Italian capital on February 25, 2003.

Son of a musician and a governess, attended classes of interpretation and Declamation with Emilia Varini and worked as an apprentice in the company of Ermete Zacconi magazine. At seventeen, he won a contest organized by the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer to find an actor who doubled to Oliver Hardy and soon became one of the best Benders of the Italian industry. He debuted in cinema with the Princess Tarakanova (1938), Fedor Ozep and Mario Soldati. During the first years of her career she played minor roles without just dialogue. Its first role protagonist came in I tre aquilotti (1942), Mario Mattolli. His beginnings in the cinema were difficult despite obtaining a great success in the radio thanks to a series of Comic characters in different programs. As a result of the success of one of their radio programs he wrote and starred in the film Mamma mia, che impressionné (1951), of Roberto L. Savarese, poorly received by critics and audiences. His first major film was the white Sheik (1952), Federico Fellini, in which played the protagonist of a fotonovela, a rogue that Sordi talent gives an impressive humanity. Despite the box office failure, Sordi worked again with Fellini in the useless (1953), another marked neo-realist tone farce centered on a group of friends from the petty bourgeoisie of a small coastal town. Its position within the Italian industry was consolidated and is devoted exclusively to film from 1953, year where he made his last appearance at the theater with the show "Gran Baraonda". From then on, he developed a feverish activity which imposed a rhythm of six films a year as an actor and occasional screenwriter. Among the best of these years emphasized an American in Rome (1954), Steno, and an eroe dei nostri tempi (1955), of Mario Monicelli.

Alberto Sordi became at the beginning of the 1960s the most famous comic of Italy thanks to their participation in some of the biggest films of the period. The first major salvo of his career was the great war (1959), Mario Monicelli, produced by Dino De Laurentiis written by Age & Scarpelli, the great pair of screenwriters of Italian cinema of post-war; an anti-war in which Alberto Sordi and Vittorio Gassman gave life to a couple of soldiers during the first world war who are turned into heroes reluctantly. The great war shared a Venice Film Festival Gold Lion with general Della Rovere (1959), by Roberto Rossellini. All House (1960), by Luigi Comencini, repeated the scheme of the great war and became one of the great works of Sordi. Produced by De Laurentiis and screenplay by Age and Scarpelli, account taken film awareness of a soldier at the end of the Alliance of Italy with Germany during the second world war. In difficult life (1961), Dino Risi, another of the great jewels of the comedy all'italiana, gave life to another of his classic rogues, in this case a journalist trying to make it at all costs in the new society of the so-called "economic miracle" Italian. In the mid-1960s, Sordi was already an institution that exceeded the boundaries of film strictly and one of the most important personalities of Italy. Its privileged position allowed him to debut as a director with an Italian in London (1966). Since then he directed sixteen films in 25 years, always by it, which did not reach the quality of their work with other directors.

He was awarded the prize for the Best Actor in the Festival of Berlin by detainee awaiting trial (1971), Nanny Loy. During the 1970s he devoted himself especially to the address. This blonde is mine (1973), inspired by his youth experiences in the world of variety shows and starring Monica Vitti, is among the best of his work as a director. Sordi evolved over the years into more obscure characters, although his strong personality gave a comic touch to all that played. Within this record he was a bourgeois small, very small (1977), Mario Monicelli, one of his last great films, which gave life to a small bourgeois pushed the crime so that your child thrives in high society, a tragicomic twist of his typical characters.

In the last stage of his career Sordi significantly reduced his professional activity and appeared only in vehicles driven which kept him as one of the actors more lockers of Italy. One of his last great work was Romanzo di a giovane povero (1995), of Ettore Scola. After more than one hundred and twenty films as actor, screenwriter and director, Peterburg, as he was known by his fellow countrymen, he remained as one of the greatest actors of his generation and one of the best comedians in the history of cinema. His work was a true x-ray of the vices and virtues of Italian society in the second half of the 20th century.
